"...My principles are quite simple," confides Eli Edut, artistic director of the third international performing arts festival Classical Spring 2002: "I never compromise on quality and I try to present a rich variety of programs that would appeal to different audiences. I invite artists who have never appeared in Israel and I don't think that only well-established Israeli cultural institutions should have the privilege of inviting top performers to our country."
This could be a possible explanation of why this young festival, which started "from scratch" only three years ago, has quickly flourished and developed into a major weeklong cultural event with renowned artists arriving from all over the world and attracting audiences not only from Rishon Le-Zion, but also from Tel Aviv and the surrounding cities.
Eli Edut is no stranger to the world of music or to that of artistic production. A horn player, who for many years was a member of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra in addition to playing in various chamber ensembles, he always felt that the context of "pure" music making was somewhat narrow for him. Back in 1988 he took an active role in establishing the Rishon Le-Zion Symphony Orchestra. Later, together with his wife, pianist and journalist Nitza Edut, he went on to produce more than a few culture programs throughout the country, such as "Voices 2000" - Saturday matinee concerts at Jerusalem's Dormition Abbey, followed by city walks, among others.
Edut's approach to the festival programming is similar: "These are concerts with an added value. Even more than that - we create complete 'festival days', dedicated to particular countries." "…I want only authentic art," accentuates Edut. "Hence, the Russian ballet must come from Russia". The Spanish day is an even better example of this approach: culminating with the intoxicating excitement of the Zarzuela gala concert, it also features a lecture and an exhibition of Spanish culture, a Spanish Fiesta dance show with the local troupe of Sylvia Duran and even a tasting of Spanish food.
"...We really want to give our audience a taste of each country, and it's amazing how practically everyone jumps in to help us", says Edut. "People probably realize that we are serious in our intention to do a good job, and thus the Austrian embassy has provided an exhibition dedicated to notable composer Arnold Schoenberg, the British Council organizes a sculpture exhibition, and the Canadians also present their country through documentary films and the like". "…One can spend the whole day there", claims Edut with an inviting smile. "View the exhibitions in the afternoon, listen to the lectures at 6 p.m., watch the performances of local artists at 7, enter the major event at 8:30 and finally, at 11, move on to the late-night Jazz concert..."
